You may not anticipate an upcoming termination today. However, the need to terminate an employee can arise despite your best efforts, and by then it may already be too late to "do it properly." To keep your terminations legal and avoid costly errors, learn what you need to know about terminations before you need to know it. Learn what you should and should not do - before, during and after the termination occurs.

- Become familiar with the standards employers are held to in justifying termination decisions.
- Learn how to document employment-related issues and why it is critical to do so.
- Plan the termination meeting: who should be there, what documents they should have and how to conduct it.
- Learn what to say and what not to say in the termination meeting.
- Take the legal course in regard to benefit and pay issues, unemployment compensation and other post-termination issues.
- Use separation agreements to protect your organization.
- Avoid problems later in giving references.
