Understanding & Using the Medallion Signature Guarantee

The Medallion Signature Guarantee program is a type of specialized stamp that is typically used (and may be required) for transferring securities such as stocks, bonds, etc. The stamp verifies the signature is authentic and the signer has legal capacity, protecting against forgery. It is obtained at financial institutions that participate in certain programs such as STAMP, SEMP, or MSP. It is generally available for U.S. citizens.

Not all medallion signature guarantee stamps are of equal value; there is a special coded prefix that is given to each stamp, and this prefix determines how much monetary value can be guaranteed. Customers are required to provide specific types of identification in order to receive the guarantee, and most institutions require the recipient to be a known customer before issuing one.
